G1000 Flight Management With 2D, or 3D Vision and A-Z Guidance, LNAV and VNAV, Drive Enhanced Flight Safety

By Steve Wightman, Owner/Builder of Super Seawind N71RJ G1000 Flight Management

For a flight from Sarasota, FL to Bedford, MA years ago, I created a flight plan for the last 600+ – mile leg of the flight in my G900X with departure, en route, arrival, and approach data with a fresh Jeppesen database. At cruise altitude, I switched the autopilot to GPS Steering, GPSS – meaning the Trutrak AP was now a slave of its master, the G900X.

I recall being a little nervous. It was the first time I had used this G900X coupled to my autopilot in flight. I did not know how well it would work. To my amazement, it immediately turned onto course like a bear to honey. It precisely followed the flight plan lateral and vertical (LV) settings to be on target for every leg of the trip. This was a 2-D map painted on the PFD insert and the MFD in full color. Beautiful!

The sun had already set. Darkness loomed. At the end of the arrival procedure and now cleared, I activated the Bedford 11 approach, pushed for 3D synthetic vision, and pulled back the power to slip down the glideslope. N71RJ, Super Seawind made every turn and descent precisely on the mark. With the runway lights now in sight, I switched off the AP and visually guided the Seawind to a welcoming runway touchdown.

After flying over 1,000 nautical miles in one day, it was a great feeling to be at my home airport again without making a single missed approach!

Such is the G900X. It makes complex routing easy to picture and follow. It can fly right down to minimums. It always told me where I was and exactly where I needed to be on my next leg. That relieved lots of stress and allowed me to focus on vital functions like communications, traffic, favorable altitudes, engine performance, and other checklist items.

In sum, the G-1000, or its twin, the G900X, is like having a professional copilot ready for action all the time. Coupled with my TruTrak autopilot – it flies my Seawind better than I do during both cruise and approach phases of flight. Thus, it serves as additional 2D, 3D, day, or night vision of American skies. Try it! Use a PC flight simulator and experience the G1000 for yourself. It is revolutionary and truly awesome flight safety technology.
